Mental Health = Soul Health

The phrase "mental health" has never resonated with me. There's something off about it.

My mental health has always been fine, but my soul sometimes aches.

Depression, anxiety, post-partum issues. These all fall under the rubric, "mental health", but I think they have more to do with the health of the soul.

Mental denotes mind. What is the mind? The brain? If you have a brain disease, they can test for that, and fix it.

If your soul is sick, there is no test. At least not a medical one.

It comes down to the difference between the mind and the soul.

The mind is a tool we use to live our lives. We have a destiny, that which our soul decided we could achieve if we choose to in this lifetime, and we also have free will to choose to achieve our destiny or not.

The mind is awesome in many ways but, but it's not a foolproof tool. It's easily manipulated. And it's limited. There are barriers we don't yet understand how to get around.

We use the mind to have thoughts about the soul, but the mind is not the soul.

When I think of someone struggling with depression, I don't imagine someone having uneasy thoughts. I imagine someone who feels detached from him or herself. That's a condition of the soul, not the mind.

Why in this culture can't we say, or even think to use the term, "soul health"?

We can't prove we have a mind any more than we can prove we have a soul, but we're OK using the term, "mind".

Ailments of the soul manifest in our bodies in all kinds of ways - not just what we refer to as mental health.

If you read medical literature, you'll often read that the reason some people get better and others don't is not clearly understood. Because they don't account for the soul in all of this.

So, how do we make sure our soul is healthy?

I don't have a definitive list, but this is a start:

1. Live the life you came here to live.
2. Do not see yourself as a victim.
3. Remove toxic people from your life and don't be confused about it, no matter what others tell you.
4. Don't judge yourself.
5. Don't be afraid.

More on this later.
