As you know, my warm, fuzzy, pink-tummied, blog-reading bunnies, I usually like to keep my posts on the lighter (and more artful, hopefully ...) side. But what's going on in NJ politics is disturbing my peace so bad I'm going to have to go there.
To date, Gov. Christie has masterfully cultivated an image of a bipartisan leader. I haven't agreed with everything he's done, but he's come across to me as someone genuinely interested in being a voice for all, not just for those who vote his way.
What a dumb-ass I've been to fall for it! I was sure I had that special, laser-sharp vision that could cut through artifice like a Ginsu knife through a hapless tomato, but apparently I'd let down my guard erroneously.
We find out, a senior aide to Christie, Bridget Kelly (I'm so disgusted I can barely spit her name out) tells the Port Authority guy David Wildstein to cause a traffic jam in Fort Lee as payback to the mayor who'd chosen not to endorse Christie.
Who do these people think they are?
First, as a public servant, one's mission should be to solve issues like traffic jams, not cause them. This impacted the lives of thousands of people. Someone had a panic attack in her car because of the lane closures. Ambulances were later than they would have been because of the lane closures. One women died having waited longer than she should have for an ambulance. The search for a missing boy was delayed because of the traffic jam, and anyone who owns a TV knows, minutes can mean the difference between saving someone and completely, utterly failing them in these scenarios.
So, Christie says he's sorry. About what? He's sorry that he was lied to by Kelly when asked whether this traffic jam had been intentional.
This reaction speaks volumes about who Christie is. He's done so much to shape his image exactly how he wanted it, that in all of this the one thing he regrets is that he couldn't do damage control sooner. Had his aide come clean, assuming he truly didn't know, he would've been able to fall on his sword sooner and potentially avoid eroding his chances at the presidency to the extent he has now.
Kelly gets fired because she lied to Christie.
Fired?
Fired?
She and all others involved should go to prison. They showed a depraved indifference to the health and well-being of the people of Fort Lee. The people whose tax money goes to the police officers and medical personnel who couldn't get where they were going as quickly as they should have been able to.
Christie should be impeached. He used his judgment to hire this person and worked with her at least five years. You don't go from having impeccable judgment to "stupid" as Christie put it, over night. You are who you are. If she's capable of this now, she's certainly made similar decisions before. So, either Christie is incompetent and inexcusably ignorant of the decisions being made by his top aides, or he's complicit and throwing them under the bus.
Either way, Christie needs to go away and the people who took the steps to make this happen need to have their pensions and other tax-paid benefits revoked and see some jail time.
